Special Issue on “Smarter Supply Chain and Big Data Applications”

Since the term “supply chain management” buzzwordedin the 1980s, it has evolved into an important management discipline and has gone through a few stages of development. Initially, its focus was very much on supplier management, which aimedto foster better buyer-supplier relationship. Later on, due to the advance in information technologies, its development had migrated to supply chain integration. Technologies, such as the Internet and RFID, have laid the foundation of modern supply chains. Nowadays, we are in the “Big Data” era that will make supply chains smarter than ever before. The development of information technologies, such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, social media, and data analytics, has accelerated in an unprecedented rate. There are numerous opportunities to innovate supply chains and revolutionise the way supply chains are operated. Nevertheless, it would not be without challenges that affect the fundamentals of supply chains, thus for example requiringmuch closer collaboration between supply chain members by sharing and using data. Conventional wisdom may not be applicable as easy as in the past. In line with the philosophy of the Journal, this special issue aims to address these challenges. This special issue aims to collect interdisciplinary research studies with practical implications.
